Go Green Art Contest Coming to a Close

Santa Clarita Transit's 'Go Green Art Contest' ends March 1.

The City’s Go Green Art Contest officially comes to a close on Monday, March 1. Open to middle school and high school students across the City, the contest offers cash prizes and giveaways to students who best illustrate through Traditional Art, Graphic Design or Photography how Santa Clarita Transit benefits the community and environment. All winning artwork will be displayed at the Grand Finale Art Exhibit at the City’s Earth Arbor Day Festival on April 17.

The City of Santa Clarita is putting the final touches on its first floor Permit Center which will streamline the permit process for community members. The Grand Opening for the Permit Center will be Tuesday March 9, but This Week In Santa Clarita provides a preview.

Low Cost Dog Vaccination Clinic Set For March 13

The Annual Dog Vaccination Clinic  will be held Saturday, March 13 from 8:00-9:30 a.m. at the Sports Complex’s Canine Country Dog Park. The 2010 Clinic hosted by the City of Santa Clarita, in cooperation with Los Angeles County, will host the will offer low-cost vaccinations, license renewal and free micro-chipping for dogs.

Vaccinations offered at the clinic include a six-in-one vaccination including Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenze and Parvovius for $14, the Bordetella vaccination for $15 and Rabies vaccination for $10, which is required by state law for all dogs more than four months old. Pet micro-chipping will also be offered free of charge.

‘A Season Of Diversity’ Essay and Poster Contest Awards Ceremony

A Season of Diversity concluded Monday evening at the Sports Complex with the Essay and Poster Contest awards ceremony. More than 500 local students submitted entries for the contest, which prompted them to address ‘How has someone from another culture inspired you?’ The list of award winners can be found here.

Santa Clarita City Councilmember Laurie Ender was on hand along with members of the Human Relations Forum to help celebrate the conclusion of this years program.

Music was provided by the Placerita/Hart String Orchestra directed by Katheryn Spula.

Winning entries were on display at the Activities Center at the Santa Clarita Clarita Sports Complex.

Postcard From The Past: Los Angeles County Civic Center

The Los Angeles County Civic Center groundbreaking happened 40 years ago this month. has a picture from groundbreaking of the Los Angeles County Civic Center which took place on February 11, 1970, 40 years ago this month. A model of the Civic Center can be seen on the right side of the photo.

Los Angeles County 5th District Supervisor Warren M. Dorn presides at the Feb. 11, 1970, groundbreaking of the County Civic Center (then called the Newhall-Saugus-Valencia Administrative Center), located at the northwest corner of Valencia Boulevard and Magic Mountain Parkway. The administrative center was designed to include all major governmental services in one place: the Sheriff’s station (which moved from San Fernando Road in 1972), the Valencia Regional Public Library, the Newhall Municipal Court (later Newhall Superior Court), and other county offices such as the tax assessor and the probation department.

Discovery Park Groundbreaking This Thursday

The City is hosting a Groundbreaking event for Phase II of its new Discovery Park on Thursday, February 25 at 11 a.m.  Located along the banks of the Santa Clara River, Discovery Park is the City’s first “passive” river park and is designed to reverse ecological damages while encouraging barrier-free interaction with the natural environment.

The park will offer opportunities for education, wildlife observation and passive recreation such as yoga, landscape painting, photography and more, with minimal impact on the surrounding environment.  Of the park’s 25 acres, the majority will remain natural. ‘A Season Of Diversity’ Concludes Tonight At Awards Ceremony

The City of Santa Clarita will bring its 2009-10 A Season of Diversity program to a close tonight with the Essay and Poster Contest Awards Ceremony at the City’s Sports Complex Activities Center. The City received more than 500 entries for the contest, which prompted students to address ‘How has someone from another culture inspired you?’

Contest winners will attend the ceremony, along with family, friends, teachers and school administrators. Mayor pro-tem Marsha McLean will also be on hand to congratulate contest winners and expand on the importance of the City’s A Season of Diversity program.

The 2009/2010 A Season of Diversity began in October and has consisted of monthly programs and activities aimed at promoting cultural awareness in the community.

The City of Santa Clarita is holding a free Enterprise Zone Breakfast Seminar Wednesday February 24 at the Santa Clarita City Hall. The breakfast seminar will take place from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and is intended to show managers, accountants and business owners, located in the Santa Clarita Enterpise Zone, how to save money.
