Disaster Plan Training Set for Septmber 21

Disaster Plan Training will be held at the City's Activities Center September 21.

The City of Santa Clarita and the Emergency Network of Los Angeles are conducting a free half-day disaster plan training for faith based and non-profit organizations. The training will be held on Tuesday, September 21 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the City of Santa Clarita Activities Center

 The training will assist organizations in developing or enhancing their disaster plans and emergency continuity of operations. Space is limited to 50 attendees. The deadline to register is Monday, September 13.

Around Town: Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital 35 Year Celebration

Mayor Laurene Weste, along with City Councilmember Laurie Ender and Mayor Pro Tem Marsha McLean were among the digitaries celebrating Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital’s 35 years of service to Santa Clarita. Roger Seaver, President and CEO of the hospital, accepted a certificate from the City Council last Thursday.

Wayward Owl Makes a Splash at City’s Aquatic Center

Earlier in the week City staff at the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center was alerted to something unusual and called animal control for assistance.

A small owl was found stuck in a drainage area of the City’s 50 meter pool.

With the aid of the City’s Aquatic’s staff the bird was rescued unharmed, just a little wet.

The bird received a clean bill of health proving that at the City’s Aquatic Center sometimes – owls well that ends well…

Concerts in the Parks Finale Saturday to Feature ‘Don’t Stop Believing’

The City of Santa Clarita’s free summer Concerts in the Park series will go out with a bang this Saturday evening with the return of the Journey tribute band Don’t Stop Believing. Don’t Stop Believing is one of the most popular bands in the history of Concerts in the Parks, last year drawing over an estimated 10,000 fans. Saturday will end the eight week series that started back in July.

The concert will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday night at Central Park. Due to the popularity of the band residents are encouraged to arrive early. For more tips on attending the summer concerts click the video here.

This year Whole Foods is making attending the Concerts in the Park much easier by providing low cost healthy meals and drinks. If you’re looking to lighten the load,  leave the cooler at home and stop by their booth to the left of the stage for the best deal in town…an all-natural dinner plate for just $5.   You can also purchase great snacks, including cotton candy, for the entire family. Ice cold waters are available for only $1.

City’s New Online Trail and Paseo Maps Offer New Features

New updated trail maps, now available on the City’s website. Residents can view the map, which allows users to zoom and scroll throughout the City’s extensive trail and paseo system, and print desired trail views.

The map’s newest feature is the display of mileage between major access points of the trail system. This will assist residents in determining distances for walking, running, and biking. The map updates reflect progress made on the City’s trail system in the past year, including completed trail segments such as the extension of the Newhall Ranch Trail to the Golden Valley Bridge and the continuation of the Santa Clara River Trail through to Interstate 5. Class II bike lanes also grew an additional 2 miles for bike travel to school, shopping, entertainment, and employment centers.

City Installs Old Town Newhall Library Construction Webcam

The City of Santa Clarita is now streaming live images of the construction progress of the new Old Town Newhall Library and Phase 2 of the Streetscape on Main Street. The streaming video will allow residents to monitor the progress of the City’s newest additions to Old Town Newhall throughout the construction.

The new Old Town Newhall library will replace the older and smaller existing Newhall Library which is currently located on 9th Street. The new facility is being constructed at the intersection of Lyons Avenue and Main Street and will be an anchor point for future revitalization of the area.

The webcam is live on the City’s website now and will remain in place for the entire length of construction. The City has previously streamed live images via webcam for both the Aquatic Center and Skate Park construction.

City Hosting Enterprise Zone Workshop Wednesday, August 25

The City of Santa Clarita is hosting an Enterprise Zone Workshop Wednesday morning.

The City of Santa Clarita will host a free Enterprise Zone Breakfast Workshop on Wednesday, August 25 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at City Hall on the first floor in the Council Chambers. The workshop will include a complimentary continental breakfast and provide local businesses with information on how to reduce their State income taxes. Representatives from the City’s Economic Development Division will facilitate the program featuring keynote speaker Max Shanker from The Tax Credit Company.

The Workshop will show local businesses how they can benefit from the Santa Clarita Enterprise Zone program on their State income taxes and where to go for additional information. Businesses located in the Zone may be able to reduce their State income tax by 50% or more.

Youth Resource Directory Updated and Online

Information on programs such as Youth Employment Services (YES), shown above, are among the resources available in the Youth Services Directory.

Whether it is time to look for a job, find information on schools or get help through counseling, the City of Santa Clarita’s Youth Resource Directory is a good place to start. The City’s Youth Resource Directory has been updated and is available online.

 The directory lists over 200 resources for teens and families in crisis including information about where to get help with addiction recovery, counseling, employment, legal services, family education, youth intervention and prevention programs, and more.  Residents, school staff, service agencies, law enforcement, and the Probation Department use the directory.

City Meets Captain Paul Becker

The City of Santa Clarita hosted a meet and greet at City Hall on August 19. 

Captain Becker brings nearly 30 years of law enforcement experience to our community and was named as the new Chief of Police following an interview process involving members of the City Council, the City Manager, and various community leaders in March of this year.

Captain Becker is a Santa Clarita resident who has committed much of his life to community service and helping others. Prior to his new assignment as our chief, he served as a lieutenant for the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau, overseeing the gang task force, unsolved murder team, and an active murder investigations team. During his nearly three decade career, he has served in several divisions within the Sheriff’s Department including: Contract Law Enforcement Bureau; Transit Services Bureau – Robbery and Assault team; Palmdale, Avalon, Carson, and Lakewood Stations; as well as the Custody Operations Division – Men’s Central Jail.

2010 Santa Clarita Marathon Preview

This Week In Santa Clarita previews the upcoming 2010 Santa Clarita Marathon, presented by Parkway Motor Cars. Online registration is discounted before October 1 and is open through October 31.

Participants registering after October 31 can do so at the Health and Fitness Expo at the Hyatt RegencyValencia on November 6. There is no day-of registration.
